Original Item: Only One Available. We used to have this type of German Civic Issue gas mask in relatively large quantities, but sadly those days are long gone. This is an excellent condition unissued model M44 Volksgasmaske (Civic gas mask), complete with its original Aluminum frame filter, manual, and wooden issue case, all with German WWII Markings.
The M 44 was the last of several civic defense gas masks issued to the German public, as a possible defense against gas attacks. With Allied Victories in Africa, Italy, and the Eastern/Russian front, the possibility of attacks against Germany proper became a reality, so these were issued to protect the population, as they ostensibly would be fighting to protect Der Vaterland. These masks were not of the same quality as the military issue, being made of relatively thin rubber coated canvas, without the usual steel fittings seen on the military issue masks. Each came in a wooden box, along with a manual regarding correct usage. The instructions even included directions regarding how to turn the box into a carry case to carry under the shoulder.
This mask is in excellent unissued condition, with the expected deterioration due to age. The lenses have clouded a bit, and the interior rubber lining has become stuck to itself in places. The securing straps are great, and function correctly. There is a stamped number 2 between the eyepieces, indicating that this is a size Medium (1 was the largest and 3 the smallest). The size is also stamped on the top of the storage box.
The aluminum filter is the same filter used with the home guard Luftschutz M40 gas mask, and is marked RL1. / 38/4, along with ink stamps that include a Waffenamt inspection marking. Filter is in excellent unissued condition.
Overall, a really nice civic issue German WWII Gas mask in excellent unissued condition, complete with the original filter and wooden case. Ready to add to your collection and display!
