Original Items: One-of-a-kind Set. Here we have a fantastic pair of German WWII Luftwaffe awards, both named to Obergefreiten Karl-Heinz Baumann, a member of 8. Staffel, Kampfgeschwader 4 “General Wever” (8th Squadron, Battle Wing 4). This was a Luftwaffe bomber wing during World War II. The unit was formed in May 1939. The unit operated the Dornier Do 17, Junkers Ju 88 and Heinkel He 111 medium bombers, with later service on the Heinkel He 177 heavy bomber. The wing was named after General Walther Wever, the prime pre-war proponent for a strategic bombing capability for the Luftwaffe, who was killed in an aircraft accident in 1936.
As a long-serving member of the unit, Baumann was awarded the 100 FEINDFLÜGE (100 Mission) award on 1. September 1943. This document comes in a lovely original manila folder, which bears the German WWII Iron Cross 1939 on the front cover, and additionally has a printed message on the inside from Reichsmarschall HERMANN GÖRING. The name on the document is hand drawn / painted, most likely with water color or something similar, and the colors are very well retained. The original stamps are all clear, and it is signed by the Oberlt. and Staffelführer (1st Lt. and Squadron Leader).
Shortly after this, Baumann was awarded the Ehrenpokal für besondere Leistung im Luftkrieg on 22. December 1943. The Ehrenpokal der Luftwaffe (Honor Goblet of the Luftwaffe) was a Luftwaffe award established on 27 February 1940 by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, the Reich Minister of Aviation and Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe. It was officially known as the Ehrenpokal “für Besondere Leistung im Luftkrieg”, or Honor Goblet “For Special Achievement in the Air War”. The award was made to aircrew who had already been awarded the Iron Cross First Class but whose performance was not considered to merit the German Cross or Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.
The document has a facsimile signature of Göring / Reichsmarſchall, and on the lower right is the signature of Der Chef des Luftwaffenperſonalamts (Chief of the Luftwaffe Personnel Department), Generaloberst Bruno Loerzer. The document is in very good condition, and has the correct raised seal on the lower left hand side.
A great set of German WWII Luftwaffe documents, ready to research and display!
