Original Item: Only One Available. In 1935 the German military introduced the K98k bolt action rifle or Karabiner 98 Kurz, as a replacement for the older GEW98 or Gewehr 98. A new, shorter bayonet was designed to go along with the shortened rifle. The K98 bayonet was officially named Seitengewehr 84/98 III or SG 84/98 III. The bayonet was designed as a close combat sidearm that could be placed on the tip of a K98.
The total length of the K98 bayonet was 15.2 inches, far shorter than the 20 inch long GEW98 bayonet. The blade was also straighter in shape and the hand guard was omitted. The K98 bayonet was carried in a leather frog, or Seitengewehrtragetasche, on the left side on the equipment belt in combination with the shovel and its carrier. The maker marks on k98 bayonets where stamped onto the top of the blade. On the reverse the batch number and suffix were stamped.
Here we have a very nice set of 3 mismatched 98k bayonets, which all vary slightly in style. The military examples are both maker marked, but the scabbards are not serial number matched, while the third is a Fireman’s dress bayonet. We are selling these at a lot, with a significant discount from what they would sell at individually. Please consult the high resolution photos for condition details.
The Bayonets In This Lot:
– Military Issue with Bakelite grip scales and steel scabbard. Maker coded 43 ffc for 1943 manufacture by the well-known maker Friedr. Herder Abr. Sohn of Solingen, the legendary “City of Blades” in Eastern Germany. Bayonet serial is 4442 / d, while scabbard is 5493 / hh.
– Military Issue with wooden grip scales and steel scabbard. Marked with pre-war code S/244. 36., for 1936 manufacture by Mundlos AG Nähmaschinenfabrik in Magdeburg Nord. Bayonet serial is 3974 / k, while scabbard is 6535 / i.
– Fireman’s Dress bayonet with nickel plated handle and blade, with bakelite grips. It is not maker marked, suggesting government issue. It was sharpened and put into service during the war, even though it is a dress bayonet. It is not equipped with a slot to fit on a rifle.
