Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice wartime German Heer (Army) Panzer Other Ranks Enlisted man’s/NCO’s visor cap. This is one of the most iconic pieces of headgear of WWII; The image of a Panzer crewman wearing a black panzer wrap and trousers paired with a cap like we have here!
This peak visor cap is constructed of fine, light field-grey whipcord wool, with a dark green cap band. The cap also has matching rosa (rose-pink) piping along the top edge and flanking either side of the band. This is the Waffenfarbe (Corps Color) for the Panzertruppen (Armored Forces), as well as Kraftfahrkampftruppe – Kraftfahrtruppen (Motor Vehicle Combat Troops). The cap retains the aluminum eagle with swas, aluminum oak leaves with silvered cockade, and black, patent-leather chinstrap. The original wire stiffener is still intact.
The cap is lined with golden brown fabric, which is size stamped ” 57 ½”. The light brown artificial leather sweatband is intact, although torn in a few places. However, the sweatband is not loose, and is affixed firmly within the cap.
The cap does show some slight mothing, which luckily does not detract terribly from the outward appearance or displayability of the cap. The insignia, chinstrap, and visor are all in very good tight condition. This cap does not show any signs of any “collector repairs” or being played with over the last several decades. This is a nice, untouched, cap! The pink piping is clean and fresh. The badge insignia is in great shape, with typical age patina to the silvered cockade.
Overall a wonderful desirable Panzer Peaked Visor Cap!
The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery.
Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
