Original Item: Only One Available. The DAF (Deutsche Arbeitsfront or German Labor Front) was a National Socialist trade union that supplanted independent unions once the NSDAPs had come to power in Germany. This 46″ x 54″ Standard Flag was most likely originally displayed on a pole inside DAF offices. It appears to be made of woven red wool, with cotton white and black multi-piece DAF emblems on each side. Unlike many we see, there is no fringe on the edges. It originally had 7 metal hanger rings installed on the header used to secure it to a pole, however all are now missing, with only some stitching remaining where they were originally attached.
The upper left corner of the flag has a tan 6″ x 8″ wool backed patch with a blue border that reads:
Rhein-
Dürkheim
1
There is a matching patch on the reverse, so it can be seen from either side. This is an area in the Rhein-Palatinate region in Western Germany, near to several spa towns and hunting lodge areas.
The flag does have light damage due to wear and moth, which can be seen in the photographs. The colors however are still quite nice, and the age toning really gives it a great look. Most of these that we see were removed hastily, and often had the header torn off, but this example has only lost the hanger rings. A great and colorful piece of third reich memorabilia!
With the dissolution of all Free Trade Unions in Germany in May 1933 the Deutsche Arbeitsfront, (German Labor Front), was established to replace the unions and to educate the workers in industry and commerce for smooth and efficient operation of all labor in the Third Reich. In October 1934 the DAF was given official status as a sub-section of the NSDAP and in March 1936 it was recognized as an independent NSDAP affiliated association and granted control of its own monetary budget. With this money it was able to procure it’s own signs and other insignia.
