Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice serving spoon, taken from the office of Gauleiter Fritz Sauckel, who was the leader of Gau (district) Thuringia in NSDAP Germany. From what we can tell, the silverware and other artifacts were taken from Sauckel’s Gau Headquarters in Weimar in April 1945, by a member of the American Third Army. Sauckel had fled the city by car on April 10, 1945, only a day after declaring Weimar a fortress city and exhorting his Volkssturm forces to resist the approaching American Army. This was quite typical of the cowardly leadership of NSDAP Germany.
The serving spoon measures 8 5/16″ long, and is marked on the front with an embossed / relief Gau Thuringen (Thuringia) Eagle logo, which has an Eagle with its wings at a right angle to each other, perched on a “static” swas (hook cross). The rear is marked by maker BRUCKMANN (Bruckmann & Sohne), along with 90, which indicates it is silver plated.
The serving spoon shows wear and swirling overall, with a lovely lightly tarnished patina overall. A very interesting piece of Third Reich memorabilia!
Ernst Friedrich Christoph ‘Fritz’ Sauckel (27th October 1894 – 16th October 1946) was Gauleiter of Thuringia from 1927 and the General Plenipotentiary for Labor Deployment (Arbeitseinsatz) from March 1942 until the end of the Second World War. Sauckel was among the 24 persons accused in the Nuremberg Trial of the Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal. He was found guilty of war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and was sentenced to death by hanging.
