Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Window Advertisement sign, used by retailers carrying edged weapons made by the Legendary Carl Eickhorn, Stahlwarenfabrik (Steel Ware Factory), arguably the most famous of all Solingen makers. The bottom of the sign has the statement Original Eickhorn over Blanke Waffen (Edged Weapons), and the central portion shows a German WWII Era Heer Army Cavalry soldier on his horse with a cavalry saber leaned up against his right shoulder. The sign looks to be made from card stock type paper, and what we can see measures 10 ⅜” x 16″. It has been matted and placed into a metal frame measuring 14 ¼” x 20 ¼”.
The upper right portion of the sign is marked with the 1935-41 Eickhorn trademark: a seated squirrel holding a sword, with the word ORIGINAL above and the firm’s name and location, Eickhorn / SOLINGEN. As is correct the letter “i” in the firms name is on the blade of the sword.
Carl Eickhorn is a legendary maker from Solingen, the famous “City of Blades” in Western Germany. According to J. Anthony Carter’s book, GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this company was founded in 1865 by Carl Eickhorn, and is arguably the most famous of all Solingen makers. Not only could the family trace their history back 500 years, but they could also demonstrate involvement in the hardening and grinding industries for the same period. Truly the nobility of Solingen Edged weapon dynasties. Eickhorn edged weapons are the most desirable of all makers.
A very nice example of a hard to find sign!
