Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent example of an original trench fighting knife with scabbard, as used by the Germans in WWI. The design features a full tang with an all wood ribbed hilt secured by two pins. The knife has a single edged drop point knife of 5 3/4″, with a false edge on the top. It is faintly marked DEMAG in a circle in front of the steel cross guard on the blade ricasso. The marking is faintly struck, but is still clear, and the reverse side is marked with a proof mark from one of the States of the German Empire. This knife was produced by Deutsche Maschinefabrik A-G (DEMAG) of Duisburg as a private purchase item.
The condition of the blade is good, with the expected wear from service and age. It looks to have been sharpened several times, and has definitely seen extensive use. The very tip is broken off but was reshaped, and currently the blade is relatively dull. The blade buffer is not present and the “S” shaped cross guard is still intact but unfortunately bent.
The knife comes in a genuine rolled steel World War One scabbard with leather belt loop. The finish on the scabbard is about 70% intact, with a lot of crazing and wear, as shown. The belt loop is intact but delicate, so do handle with care. While the belt loop is intact, unfortunately the retaining strap is completely missing.
100% original, an excellent example for display in any quality German edged weapons collection.
