Original Item: Only One Available. This is the first Carter Type EB2 we have had the pleasure of offering here at IMA! We always encounter the Ersatz bayonets but never the rare “Trench Knife” bayonet combo. This classification comes from Anthony Carter’s book German ersatz bayonets. In this book (published in 1976), Carter provided designations to identify most of the known ersatz bayonet variations in order to more easily categorize them for collectors. This example can be found on page 33 of the classic work by J.ANTHONY CARTER, GERMAN BAYONETS, VOLUME THREE published in 1992.
EB2 Bayonets were made by several companies; Gottlieb Hammesfahr & Co, F. W. Horster & Co, Robert Klaas & Co, and Franz Koller & Co. This example is marked on the ricasso with the manufacturer F. KOELLER / & CO.
This example appears as if it was recovered from a battlefield due to the evidence of past pitting and oxidation present on the handle. The handle looks as if it was buffed, cleaned and then painted black. The blade was buffed, polished and now exhibits a lovely bright appearance. The included scabbard is the correct type for the knife and is constructed of black painted rolled steel with remnants of the leather belt hanger. The paint does appear to be original and is retained quite nicely.
A lovely, rather rare example of an EB2 ready for further research and display.
