Original German WWI Set of Three Steel Hilt Ersatz Bayonets with Scabbards – Carter Types EB4, EB9 & EB37 Original Items

Original Item: Only One Available. German WWI Ersatz bayonets with their original 12″ blades are very hard to find today. Many were officially shortened to 10″, such as two of the three bayonets in this set, and sent to to Turkey as aid during WWI. The classic work by J.ANTHONY CARTER, GERMAN BAYONETS, VOLUME THREE published in 1992 is the complete work covering all types of WWI Ersatz bayonets and cherished by bayonet collectors everywhere.

The one original length bayonet from this set is Anthony Carter’s Reference EB4. It features a heavy smooth bent steel hilt with split muzzle ring and a two piece crossguard marked 5195. It has a 12 3/8 inch fullered blade, which bears a faint imperial proof on the spine. Overall length is 17 1/4 inches and it comes complete with a correct all steel blued scabbard marked fag in an oval, for Fischers Aktien-Gesellschaft, a company primarily known for the manufacture of ball-bearings. This company made a large number of ersatz scabbards during the war.

The two shortened this set are Anthony Carter’s Reference EB9, appearing on pages 46-47, and Reference EB37. Both features a heavy smooth bent steel hilt with split muzzle ring and a single piece crossguard, though the EB9 has a thicker guard, and the EB37 has an “S” shaped guard. Both were made originally with 12 inch fullered blades, officially later shortened to 10″, which bear faint imperial proofs on the spines. Both are serial number marked on the crossguards, and come with standard Mauser style steel scabbards.

J. Anthony Carter died in 2001 but his four volume work is acknowledged as the supreme reference work on the subject most especially the Ersatz Volume (No.3) which was his great passion throughout his lifetime.
