Original Item: Only One Available. These are incredibly RARE, an ORIGINAL German WW1 M-98/05 BUTCHER BAYONET converted for use with the Yugoslavian M-1924 Mauser Rifle, complete with slimmer all steel scabbard. These were the very first bayonets introduced by the new Yugoslavia, just after World War One, which created this “New Country”.
An original German Butcher bayonet, now 19 ½” long, the blade having been slimmed down to “normal” width still showing Ghost marking of the German WWI maker on the 14” blade. Close Examination shows the marking to read:
WEYERSBERG
&Co
SOLINGEN
This is the maker marking of Weyersberg & Co., Waffenfabrik, one of the many various companies run by members of the large Weyersberg family. This particular company only seems to have existed for about 30 years, encompassing the WWI period, per J. Anthony Carter’s work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS. The company seems to have been set up mainly to supply Austria-Hungary. Only a few S 98/05 bayonets were reported to have been made by this maker.
The bayonet comes complete with a slimmer German style all steel scabbard. VERY RARE being the first bayonet issued with the later very common M-1924 Rifle. Please see Watts and White’s fine work THE BAYONET BOOK, PAGE 451, item 966.
