Original Item. Only One Available. This is an extremely scarce Model of 1849 Prussian Mounted Infantry Officer’s saber with its original scabbard. The sword is beautifully maker-marked on the spine for the Peter Daniel Lüneschloss Waffen-Fabrik company in Solingen. These sabers are rare enough on their own without the scabbard, but this example retains its original scabbard, which is also in great shape.
The Peter Daniel Lüneschloss Waffen-Fabrik company was founded in 1810. It originally began as a cutlery manufacturer but started the production of edged weapons in 1848. During the American Civil War of 1861-65, Lüneschloss supplied edged weapons to both Federal and Confederate forces. The company began producing bayonets in 1860.
The sword measures roughly 38” long with the scabbard on. The hilt consists of a rayskin grip secured with wire, and a small metal loop catch for a sword knot to be attached. The pommel branches out to create a flower-shape. The blade is beautifully etched with vinery, field cannons, and shields. It is signed gorgeously on the spine P.D. Lüneschloss, Solingen.
The scabbard is in good shape with about 50% of its paint retained, the rest covered by oxidation. The mouth of the scabbard has been pinched to allow it to hug the blade tighter. It retains its two hanging rings.
This is a very scarce Prussian sword with its original scabbard from the Franco-Prussian War era. Ready for further research and display.
