Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice little hunting rifle in approximately .43 caliber, made in the typical German 19th century design. The butt plate, barrel tang and lock plate fully decorated with sculpting and engravings. The lock appears to depict a wolf at bay, and the barrel tang a Stag at rest. It features all iron mounts, which are all ornately engraved. It measures 44 1/2 inches in overall length, with a very nice 28 inch long octagonal barrel, which is maker marked on the top:
ULBRICH IN DRESDEN
From what we can tell, this is most likely for Carl Friedrich Ulbrich(t), a known mid 19th Century gunsmith operating in Dresden, then the Capital of the Kingdom of Saxony.
As with most hunting rifles, this example is fitted with a “set trigger”, where depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy. It is fully functional at present, and is set to be quite sensitive. The lock will also fire without the use of the set trigger, and it also has a very nice half cock safety, which is fully functional. Definitely some high end appointments on this rifle!
The bore is in good condition, with with clear rifling and a bright finish on the lands, while the grooves show fouling and oxidation. There is a simple wooden cleaning rod with a threaded brass tip installed, which is mainly for display. It has a very nice rear ladder sight and standard front blade sight, both of which look to be original.
Very good quality which can display well!
