Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice early example of the long bladed bayonet for the French Fusil Modèle 1874 “Gras” Rifle, first developed as a cartridge conversion of their Chassepot Fusil modèle 1866 Needle Fire Rifle. The attachment dimensions were the same as the Chassepot, so the original “Yataghan” saber bayonets also fit, but the more modern straight design with the reinforced spine had superior penetrating power against any type of armor.

These were very often cut down or altered later on in their service life, and this example has been slightly shortened to have a 19 blade and overall length of 24, It looks like the tip broke off, rather than shortened on purpose. The T-shaped spine of the bayonet is marked M’re d’Armes de St. Étienne Juillet 1875, indicating original manufacture at the arsenal in St. Étienne, during July, 1875, relatively early during the production of these bayonets. It is in good condition, with some evidence of past oxidation. It looks like the tip was most likely broken off due to rust, and then profiled. The wood of the handle is nicely worn, and the brass pommel has a yellow green patina.

The Cross guard of the bayonet is marked with serial number 20045. The scabbard matches the serial number.

A good example of a hard to find bayonet, slightly shortened and ready to add to your French edged weapon collection!
