Original French M1874 Gras Bayonet by Châtellerault with Removable Custom Handguard & Scabbard – dated 1877 Original Items

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice early example of the long bladed bayonet for the French Fusil Modèle 1874 “Gras” Rifle, first developed as a cartridge conversion of their Chassepot Fusil modèle 1866 Needle Fire Rifle. The attachment dimensions were the same as the Chassepot, so the original “Yataghan” saber bayonets also fit, but the more modern straight design with the reinforced spine had superior penetrating power against any type of armor.

These were very often cut down or altered later on in their service life, but this example still has the original full length 20 1/2 inch long blade, with an overall length of 25 1/2 inches. The T-shaped spine of the bayonet is marked M’re d’Armes de St. Chât’t Juillet 1877, indicating original manufacture at the arsenal in Châtellerault, during July 1877, very early during the production of these bayonets. It is in very good condition, with oxidation or staining on the blade, just the usual runner wear. The wood of the handle is nicely worn, and the brass pommel has a lovely green patina.

The Cross guard of the bayonet is marked with serial number B80544, which matches the serial number on the scabbard, which is also in very good condition. It is still straight, with much of the original finish, and no major issues to note.

Also included is a custom made bent steel removable Handguard, designed to fit into the bayonet mounting hardware. It is unmarked, but is definitely well made, and fits in perfectly, making the bayonet a very effective thrusting weapon, with some measure of protection.
