Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice Upmarket French Flintlock pistol, intended for a gentleman or perhaps an officer. It is marked on the lock plate and top of the barrel by maker Paul Montmain, a French gunsmith based in the city of Saint-Étienne. He worked from 1710 to 1745, and was succeeded by his son Jean Baptiste Montmain, who worked until 1759.
The pistol is definitely well decorated, with engraving on the lock plate, hammer, and pan. There is lovely silver wire inlay on the back of the wrist, which also bears an ummarked silver oval escutcheon. The top of the barrel has some lovely gold inlay, which is around the breech area bearing the gunsmith’s name, and also around the front sight. The walnut stock is also expertly carved, outlining many of the fittings with foliate designs.
The pistol is equipped with a 6 3/4 inch barrel and has an overall length of 17 inches, firing a most likely a 5/8″ lead ball. All of the standard stock fittings are of polished iron, with a very nice ramrod, which looks to be original. Condition is overall very good, with wear commensurate with age. There is some oxidation and wear to the metalwork overall. The lock is functional, but currently fires at half cock due to a worn tumbler. The stock does have some cracks and past repairs, as shown.
A Classic French Flintlock Pistol from the early 18th century, very attractive and ready to display!
