Original Item: Only One Available. This is a standard French Model of 1842 Short Artillery Rifled Musket with a back action lock, just received out of a collection. These were usually produced as smoothbore long muskets, but the export trade required rifles, indicating this was possibly made for export to the U.S.. It is fully steel mounted and does bear a maker marking on the lock plate: Mre R’le / de Tulle., indicating manufacture at the Royal French Arsenal located in Tulle. There is also a marking of Mle 1842 on the barrel tang, indicating that this rifle was produced with the smoothbore barrel, and was converted afterwards.
The barrel is now 35 1/2″ in length and the rifled musket is 48 1/2″ overall. There are some additional markings on the barrel, such as 850, which could be a serial number or part of a date. There is also a faint stock rondel, but polishing has all but obliterated it. The all iron mounts have no finish remaining on the metalwork. Very sound walnut stock and bright metal finish showing the minimum of old pits.
Comes complete with it’s original iron ram rod. Lock functions but the trigger can stick against the trigger guard. Very possibly imported for the Civil War. In fine order, cleaned and ready to display!
Year of Manufacture: circa 1850 – rifled later.
