Original Items: Only One Lot of 2 Available. Before guns and modern arms, humans had to defend themselves. During the pre-colonial times, Africans created unique weapons that were used in wars, ritual celebrations, grazing, hunting, and sometimes as emblems of power and prestige. Among the notable African weapons used are spears, bows, shields, arrows, and swords for some communities.
The items in this lot:
– Poto Ngombe Prestige Short Sword: These double edged forged iron blades existed in many different varieties. The Ngombe sword is a traditional sword or knife from Central Africa. Mainly the weapon is ascribed to the Ngombe but also to the Poto and Doko and partly to the Ndunga and Budja tribes. It is known by the local names ingonda and mopamba. The pommel of the handle would have been partially covered with fur, forming a pouch. The pouch is said to have contained magical substances that are supposed to protect the wearer. The handles are often wrapped with ribbons made of copper , brass or rattan. This example’s handle is partially wrapped with brass. Mainly used as a prestige object and a symbol of dignity for the chiefs.

Unknown Sword: This is a strange one for sure. The sword has somewhat similar appearance to a few other tribal examples, but none with this shape and could even possibly be an unfinished product. It appears to have been ground dug and does have a lot of pitting and oxidation present. The wood handle was cracked and repaired at some point.
