Original item: One of a Kind. This is a WW2 photograph of the great British Field Marshal BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY, perhaps Great Britain’s most loved Army Commander of World War Two. The photograph itself measures 6 1/4″ tall by 4 1/4″ wide, and is mounted in a 10″ by 8″ glazed gold frame. The upper right corner is signed in ink: B. L. Montgomery / Field. Marshal..

Born in 1887, Montgomery joined the Army and had served in WW1. By August of 1942 he was given Command of the British 8th Army in Egypt, facing General Erwin Rommel, better known as “The Desert Fox”. Mongomery defeated Rommel at the Battle of El Alamein and by May of 1943 had driven the Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) out of North Africa. He then led the Allied invasion of Sicily.

In 1944 he was one of the principal planners and became the Allied Commander of all Ground Forces during Operation Overlord, better known as D-DAY. He then became the Commander of the 21st Army Group in North West Europe and took the German Surrender at LUNEBURG HEATHER in Northern Germany in May 1945. He was then made the 1st VISCOUNT MONTGOMERY OF ALAMEIN after WW2.

A genius but difficult man, who rivaled the U.S. General George Patton for both brilliance and downright cussedness: both men gave the Supreme Commander General Eisenhower much to think and worry about during the course of the war.
