Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful British WWII Royal Navy Ensign, which looks to be of heavy wool or linen construction. These were known as the “White Ensign”, and were the main battle flag of the ship. This large example, measuring approximately 6 feet by 12 feet (70″ x 145″), would have been used for a capital ship such as a small battleship. We previously had a flag from the HMS Rodney, a British Nelson-class battleship, which was actually a bit smaller than this.
It is ink stamped very WHITE ENSIGN on the canvas header, and also has 8 and BDS marked in squares, next to a “Broad Arrow” proof. The flag has a nice halyard rope going through the header, with clips at the top and the bottom. There is a piece of wood inside the header at the top, which attaches to the top clip, and there are additional sturdy grommets as well. This is definitely a flag intended to stand up to the wind and weather of the open sea.
It is in remarkable condition but shows some use and has a minimal amount of tearing and other very minor wear. A genuine Naval battle flag from WW2 offered in very good condition. A very impressive display piece!
