Only One Set Available: This is an excellent condition complete fighter pilot set from World War Two which consists of the following items:
RAF Royal Air Force Type E Flying Helmet: Excellent condition beige cotton ‘Aertex’ Type ‘E’ lightweight internally wired flying helmet. The helmet has a gray elastic chin strap and black rubber cups protecting the external radio receivers. The receivers are marked 10A/13466. On the left hand side below the rubber earpiece is a sewn-in plug connector for the throat microphone. At the rear of the helmet is a single buckle strap and four brown leather snap fastening tabs to secure the flying goggle straps and the wiring loom cables. Internally, the helmet has chamois ear pads to reduce external noise, and is marked with a black stamp reading No. 2 6 7/8 – 7. The loom wires emerge from the rear of the helmet and combine to form a 1.8 m insulated cable which ends in a large black bakelite plug.
The Type E lightweight internally wired Flying Helmet was used by RAF and RAAF aircrew circa WW2. Cut from the same pattern as the standard Type ‘C’ leather helmet, the Type ‘E’ was made of cotton ‘Aertex’ fabric which made it lighter and more comfortable for extended wear. The first versions were unwired, but this model, with an internal wiring loom for radio receivers and a built-in microphone plug connector on the left hand side, superceded the earlier varieties in 1944. Originally intended for the use of Coastal Command crews, it was also adopted by many fighter pilots, and remained in service until the introduction of protective ‘Bone Dome’ crash helmets in the early 1950s.
Original WWII British RAF Royal Air Force M.T.L.L. No2 throat microphone offered in excellent condition. The M.T.L.L. No 2 was used by the RAF and by the army. The mic was worn around the neck and was designed to pick up vibrations directly from the voice box. The two leather covered sensors were pressed against either side of the throat. The great advantage of the throat mic was that it could be used effectively in very noisy environments, such as inside a tank or an aircraft in combat. Even loud sounds around the wearer would be largely rejected. Although the audio quality was not fabulous, speech has a high degree of intelligibility.
Original British WWII RAF Mk VIII Goggles.
Beautiful set of WW2 issue Mark VIII (MK8) flying goggles type 22C/930.The MkVIII goggles were the final and most successful of the RAF issue flying goggles during the Second World War. Introduced officially in October 1943, they were not supplied to aircrew until the earlier stocks were exhausted. The MkVIII’s continued in RAF service until made obsolete by the introduction of fibreglass helmets fitted with drop-down visors. They are authentic British WW2 fighter pilot goggles as used by Spitfire and Hurricane pilots. Suede lined with elastic cotton adjustable strap. Complete with an original RAF dark blue paint finish to steel parts, these are rare WW2 RAF fighter pilot goggles. Offered in excellent condition.
