Original Item: Only One Available. This is an absolutely beautiful WWII British “Cap, Field Service” in near mint condition. The Field Service Cap was first introduced into the British Army as early as 1894 in India. Originally made of distinctive regimental pattern colors, the cap was made of khaki cloth by the time it was introduced for wear by the Royal Flying Corps in 1913. With the introduction of the Battledress uniform in 1937, the Field Service Cap (khaki), adorned with appropriate unit badges, became the standard working dress for all ranks. The Field Service cap was replaced by the equally unpopular ‘Cap, General Service (GS)’ in 1943.
This cap was unissued and has no regimental or any other type of unit insignia present. The front of the cap has two lovely general service buttons still firmly attached. Both hooks and their respective sewn loops are still present and holding strong. The interior features a light red felt sweatband while the lining is of orange satin, both in near perfect condition. The lining still retains the original manufacturer’s label that reads as:
ARMY & NAVY
STORES Ltd.
WESTMINSTER, S.W.1.
Army & Navy Stores was a department store group in the United Kingdom, which originated as a co-operative society for military officers and their families during the nineteenth century. The society became a limited liability company in the 1930s and purchased multiple independent department stores during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1973, the Army and Navy Stores group was acquired by House of Fraser. In 2005, the remaining Army & Navy stores (the flagship store located on Victoria Street in London and stores in Camberley, and Chichester) were refurbished and re-branded under the House of Fraser nameplate. House of Fraser itself was acquired by Icelandic investment company, Baugur Group, in late 2006, and then by Sports Direct on the 10 August 2018.
This is a wonderful example, one that would be extremely difficult to upgrade from. Comes more than ready for display.
