Original Item: Only One Available. This is most compelling when seen in person! A Barn Find in England after over 100 years of neglect, this truly is the real thing!
This is a Trench Lamp with hanging hoop, intended for use with either an Oil Lamp or if oil was not available with a lighted Candle. The Lantern has four flat glazed panes inside a circular cage of twisted wire, with a latching hinged top for access to the interior. All it’s four glazed panels (windows) are present and undamaged.
On the iron base surround there is a Makers embossed tin label stating the Maker’s name and address:
ALBION LAMP CO
R.A.L.C.
1916
BIRMINGHAM
We have unfortunately not been able to ascertain what the meaning of the initials RALC mean. Possibly Royal Army Lantern Corps, or Royal Army Lighting Co. There is a similarly marked Trench Lantern in the Imperial War Museum, but they unfortunately do not have information on what RALC represents either. A great research potential.
Standing 12″ tall by 7 1/2″ across plus it’s wire hinged hanging/carrying hoop, this is quite large. A most compelling memento of Trench Warfare that saw service in the Great War.
