Officially known as: Saddlery, universal – Bucket, rifle, Cavalry this was specifically designed for the for the .303 caliber Short Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle (SMLE). The design is similar to earlier buckets for the “Long Lee-Enfield”, the Mark I version for the SMLE was introduced by List of Changes 12714, 1 Mar 1905. The “bump out” on the top throat accommodates the SMLE bolt handle. Designed to be used in conjunction with the British Universal Pattern Saddle (UP saddle).
This example is offered in very good condition with stitching and copper rivets still present. We World War One maker markings as follows:
