Original Item: On-of-a-kind. This is a wonderful genuine WWI clock constructed from the hub portion of World War One Aeroplane propeller. The clock is nicely marked on the face GEC and MADE IN ENGLAND worked perfectly in England however the different in voltage in the U.S. requires that an adapter be used on this side of the Atlantic.

The wood propeller hub bears a silver plaque stating:

L.G. BACON

2ND LIEUT. R.F.C.

14TH NOVEMBER 1916.

Research reveals that on May 5th, 1917 2nd Lieutenant Leonard Guy Bacon together with his Observer Officer G. Worthing were shot down in their Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2D fighter/bomber A1942 by the German Lieutenant Walter GOTTSCH of JASTA 8. Observer Officer Worthing was killed and 2nd Lt. Bacon became a Prisoner of War. The Fighter Ace Walter Gottsch, having been credited with twenty victories, was himself shot down and killed on 10th May, 1918. He was only 20 years old.

Included is a copy of a photograph of Lt. Bacon’s F.E.2D. The photo was taken after its final impact and it is surrounded by German soldiers. Lieutenant Bacon survived the Great War and married Edith Mary Naylor once the war ended. He became a civil servant.

A fascinating WW1 mantle clock complete with provenance to a known R.F.C. pilot during the Great War.
