Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine WW1 British Officer’s partially leather covered Swagger stick carried by the upper crust of the Officer Corp. These were introduced late in WW1 to replace officer’s carrying the metal topped cane Regimental sticks. It is a fact that common even soldiers were issued cane swagger sticks when going on leave in WW1, so that they had something to occupy their hands. Early in the war delicate old ladies had bitterly complained that Tommies were often seen on Rail Road either “picking their noses or scratching their privates”. The result from an outraged War Office was to give the officers something else to carry around with them.
This swagger stick has a weighted end in the shape of a lovely skull, most likely used as a trench club of sorts when needed. The swagger stick measures 21 ½” in total length with the upper 6 inches being covered in leather.
The overall condition is very nice and is very unique in design. The tip has an intricate skull that appears to have been carved separate from the shaft and attached. There is no extensive damage present.
A great example ready for further research and display.
