Original Item: One of a Kind. This came to us from a large WWI ROYAL FLYING CORPS Collection we received from England. We are however a bit confused as to how this item works, as we have not been able to test it. It is marked on the bottom with a serial number, as well as the maker and other informationr regarding the lamp:

It appears to be a cigarette lighter shaped as an Aladdin-style Oil Lamp with a snake handle to side. We assume that the side spout bears the flame and the central finial appears to be a removable tamper, perhaps for a pipe. the finial housing unscrews and reveals the cotton wadding that retained the fuel. The tamper may be to press on the cotton wadding to release more fuel. There may have been a cover for the side spout at one point. Clearly intended as a “Desk item” the side of the silver plated Lamp is engraved:-

Internet research tells us that RFC STATION HALTON was established in June of 1917 by order of Major General SEFTON BRANCKER, Deputy Director General of Military Aeronautics as a training school for Aircraft technicians starting will 400 pupils that year. By the end of WWI just a year later , the number has increased to over 2,000. The establishment was under the command of LT. COLONEL IAN BONHAM CARTER.
