Original Items: One Set Only. The 52ND REGIMENT OF FOOT was also known as the OXFORDSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY, a Regiment that was present at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Of Lieutenant FRANK B. DIXON of the 52nd we know nothing but he can be researched. What we have is a charming water color painting of the Officer, framed and glazed 10″ x 11″, which is marked in the corner Lieut.t Frank. B. Dixon / 52nd Light Inft.y. This comes together with what appear to be Two Matching telescopes of completely different sizes.
The larger, a brass telescope of single draw with an extendable sun shade to the front, measures 39″ when fully extended and 20 1/2″ when fully compressed. The barrel is wrapped in blacked pebbled leather. It has sliding brass lens covers to both front and rear. It is not visibly Maker marked but is engraved Lt. F.B. Dixon in a frame of the sun shade. The smaller telescope, which appears to be very similar, is a FIVE drawer, measuring 14″ in overall fully expanded length and just 4″ overall when fully compressed. Again with no Maker marks and it is also engraved Lt. L.B. Dixon around the brass housing to the front lens. Both scopes give good images and are in excellent condition.
We know the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot, Light Infantry served in India in the 1850’s and were present for the Siege of Delhi in 1857, showing great bravery and valor. At the time they were under the command of Gen Sir Archibald Maclaine, who commanded 1847–1861.
A charming set of a large Field and small Pocket telescopes, matching together with an original period water color, all named to this Officer. Ready research and display!
