Original Item: Only One Available. This is a most interesting silver plated engraved Victorian early serving platter with cover, which has a removable handle on the top. We assume that this is so that the lid can also be used as a platter once no longer needed. The cover displays the 1808/1859 rampant lion motif/crest of the British East India Company.
Almost certainly dating to about 1850, having come out of an officer’s mess in India. It is silver plated over brass base metal, clearly well used with areas of brass coming apparent. The platter definitely must have an interesting history, as in 1857 the Sepoy Rebellion, better known as the Indian Mutiny erupted, with massive loss of life to both Europeans and Natives.
The platter has Hall and maker marks on the bottom, and measures approximately 12″ x 9 3/4″ x 5″ when closed with the handle on.
Great for Sunday’s luncheon !
