Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a very nice “pocket” telescope, recently acquired as part of a large Optics collection IMA purchased in 2018 in England. It’s definitely a British telescope, however unlike many telescopes, the name on this example does not give any indication of what unit the officer belonged to. The fitting on the wooden main barrel is marked:

Capt. B. Faversham.

While this could be a British officer, they were usually wont to also have their regiment engraved. Given the time period and the officer’s name, it’s possible that this was the property of an Union or Confederate officer during the U.S. Civil War. We have done some research, and there is unfortunately just not enough to go on.

The telescope is marked on the smallest barrel by the eye piece with the makers information:

This is a THREE DRAW telescope measuring 22 1/2″ when fully extended including its Sun Shade, and just 6 7/8″ when fully compressed. It has a protective sliding eyepiece lens cover. Ideal for an Officer serving in the field, be it in the Crimea or in Virginia. Fully brass mounted with wood barrel covering, this is a most attractive instrument that still gives a good image, though the lenses could use a good cleaning.
