Original Item: Only One Available. Who remembers Commissary JAMES LANGLEY DALTON V.C.? He was the supply officer at the famous action at The Battle of Rorke’s Drift in the Zulu Wars of 1879 who won the Victoria Cross for Valor. His actions were wonderfully remembered in the film ZULU starring Michael Cain and Stanley Baker.

Well, the owner of this blue cloth helmet and tin was not at The Battle of Rorke’s Drift but he was an officer in the Commissariat Department just a couple of years after that battle. In 1879 the unit was referred to as the Commissariat and Transport Department which was changed in 1880 to the Commissariat and Transport Staff.

The tin is finely engraved on brass name plate as follows:

The helmet has a ball top and a Queen’s Crown to the top of the gilt helmet plate. The helmet is offered in splendid condition with much gilding remaining to the mounts and comes complete with is chained chin scales. The helmet also bears a Hobson & Sons trade label inside the crown of the interior.
