with another inscription below stating:-
A Souvenir of his Son
from
Major General Grant, R.A.
to
Lieut. Colonel R.F. Crawford R.A.
Clearly in remembrance of his deceased Son who it turns out died of Fever. Lt. Col. Crawford was most likely his superior officer, and Maj. General Grant gave it as a token of appreciation, as well as a way for an officer to remember a valued subordinate.

This lovely 2 draw telescope measures 24 1/2″ when fully extended reducing to just 9 1/2″ when fully closed. Constructed of Nickel Plated brass, or possibly solid Nickel Silver, with a fine leather covering to the Barrel.
In great working order and condition Circa 1845-1855.
