Original Item: Only One Available. Dating from the late 1790s or early 1800s this is a classic early Third Model Brown Bess Musket having been officially adopted in 1796. The lock bears the Royal Cypher marking with a crown over G.R. and is also marked TOWER across the lock tail. It has simplified all-brass furniture including an S pattern side plate, which indicates private purchase.
The 39-inch barrel bears British proof marks along with “CHATHAM. R.N.” together with an anchor stamp.
Clearly this Musket was obtained by the Royal Navy and issued to the huge ship yards located at Chatham in Kent where many of Nelson’s man-o-war battle ships were built. A lovely condition musket with a very interesting and rare provenance.
