Original Item: One of a Kind. This magnificent Breach loading Sporting Rifle of the Victorian era used WILLIAM TERRY’S PATENT of 1855. It was built by CHARLES NEPHEW & CO. of LONDON, almost certainly for the visiting KING OF NEPAL, who placed many personal orders with this Gun Smith and multiple Military orders including for Percussion Cavalry Carbines. The King was a great Gun Lover and ordered Millions of Percussion Caps from PURDEY’S, while also a fine selection of Sporting Rifles and handguns for his own use.
In 1856 William Terry entered a partnership with a Bertram Calisher, thereafter the company became CALISHER TERRY Co.. Our example we believe was made in 1855 prior to Calisher, and used a a form of bolt action allowing a paper cartridge to be inserted from the rear of the action and discharged with a regular side hammer and percussion cap.
This rifled half stock sporting rifle is in approximately .625″, and is marked TERRY’S PATENT / 25 BORE over the loading gate. The bore looks like it has never been fired, still mirror bright after 150+ years. It is stocked in the finest quality Walnut with fully engraved mounts, and excellent checkering in the wood. The lock is marked CHAS. NEPHEW & CO.. Entry into the chamber is via an opening portal behind the hammer, all the metalwork is exquisitely London engraved. The top of the Octagonal barrel is engraved:-
CHAS. NEPHEW & CO. CALCUTTA
This is followed by a lengthy inscription in “negari” the Hindu version spoken by the Nepalese. Very roughly is states the name of the King of Nepal at the time of the gun arriving in Nepal.
