Original British Single Shot Percussion Belt Pistol by J. Bishop for U.S. Export Market – Circa 1830 Original Items

Original Item: Only One Available. This is of the type of small single shot percussion pistol that were shipped to the United States in the 1830’s for personal protection, and were widely used by Gamblers and Frontier men. Not quite small enough for most pockets, these were worn in the owners belt for easy access. The back action lock is marked by British maker J. BISHOP, and it also features some lovely engraving.

The Walnut stock nicely checkered with a silver lidded cap compartment in the butt and an unmarked silver escutcheon on the back of the wrist. Measuring 9 1/2 inches in overall length, the pistol has an octagonal barrel of 6″ in approximately 50 caliber. It looks like originally there was some silver inlay on the breech end of the barrel, but it was lost at some point. Under the barrel is a wood ramrod, certainly a working life replacement.

Condition is quite good, though the stock has definitely suffered from cracking and damage in the past on both sides. There is a split on the left side near the lock screw, and some cracking on the right above the trigger. We checked the functionality of the lock, and it still holds correctly at half cock, firing at full.
