Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a fine Queen Anne flintlock blunderbuss pistol with a 6″ iron swamped barrel, measuring 11″ in overall length. It has a wood club shaped butt, with brass mounts of trigger guard, ram rod pipe and side plate. There is a very nice and interesting inscription on the side plate:
Abel Tibbs
at
THE SWAN WITH TWO NECKS
A well known Coaching Inn found on Lad Lane, The Swan with Two Necks is mentioned in the diaries of the British Politician SAMMUEL PEPYS during the reign of King CHARLES II. No doubt Mr. ABEL TIBBS was the current Landlord in 1713 and this early English pistol with its tang screw rising from the trigger guard and without a pan reinforcement arm confirms the pistol’s early lock date.
The banana shaped lock plate is marked with royal cypher CROWN / AR, for Queen Anne, who ruled between 1702 until 1714, being the last of the House of Stuart. The lock plate tail is marked WALKER / 1713, who worked from 1690 to1739 and is
recorded as making “Flintlock Blunderbusses with Royal cypher”.
The brass side plate is typical of those found from the time, and the wooden ramrod has a lovely brass tip, with a clearing worm on the other end.. The gun’s barrel bears London Proof Marks, including the CROWN / CP black powder proof and the CROWN / V viewing mark. The top of the barrel is marked LONDINI, the “latinized” name for London. There is the maker mark JW between the proofs, for J. Walker.
