Original British Private Purchase Brown Bess Flintlock Carbine by Barnett of London – c.1800 Original Items

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice “Brown Bess” Flintlock carbine, almost certainly a “private purchase” item, as it does not bear any royal or military proof marks. This fine example dates from the turn of the 18th century, and is marked on the lock plate BARNETT / LONDON.

Thomas Barnett started work in London in 1750 until 1800 when the firm became Barnett & Son. In 1835 the firm was named “John Barnett & Sons” and from 1875 until 1900 “Edward Barnett & Sons” An English gun making dynasty that enjoyed many government contracts as well as from the East India Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company.

The just over 29 1/2″ Barrel retains does not have any rear sight, as is correct. It bears the correct London Proofhouse CROWN / GP “Gunmakers” black powder proof and CROWN / V viewed marks, with another proof mark between that we do not recognize. This is most likely from the maker of the barrel. The lock does not have any proof or inspection marks. It functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.

Overall the carbine is in very good condition, with a lovely patina of age. The stock is solid, with no major damage or repairs, and old finish now worn away in places. It has all brass fittings, with three ramrod pipes, and a ramrod still in place.
