Original Item: Only One Available. RICHARD SHARPE is a wonderful fictional character created by Bernard Cornwell, and the subject of the 25 historical novels in the “Sharpe” series. In the books, Sharpe at one point belonged to the 95th Regiment of Foot, a Rifle Regiment, but in the stories he carried one of these massive Cavalry Swords on his various campaigns.
Here is a real and genuine example of the huge pattern of 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword, complete with its iron scabbard. The spear pointed 35″ single edged blade with a very slight curve bears the Maker’s name of DAWES / BIRM’M on the rear spine, for maker Samuel Dawes of Birmingham, England, a known maker of swords during the 19th century. There are also the remains of various Inspector’s and Proof Marks on the blade ricasso near the guard.
It still retains its original double sided shell guard and the grip retains its leather covering, though the wire wrapping is no longer present.
This was an attic find in England and we are offering it just as we received it with over 225 years of patina. A very rare sword to find under any circumstances.
