Original Item. One of a Kind. H.M.S. VICTORY was Admiral Lord Nelson’s Flagship at the Battle of TRAFALGAR that took place in 1805, at which Lord Nelson was killed in Action. The ship is undoubtedly the most famous British Naval Vessel in history. It was originally scheduled to be broken up, but public outcry led it to be spared. It was eventually visited by Queen-in-waiting Victoria, which greatly raised interest in the vessel, which began to see large numbers of tourists. It did eventually sink due to age, but was subsequently raised.
It has since been preserved, in dry Dock in Portsmouth’s NAVAL DOCKYARD and is still considered a serving Battleship. Every few years it is restored and certain timbers and Copper cladding is replaced. At those times the retired wood components are often offered for sale to Naval enthusiasts, as a way to offset costs and reduce waste.
This is a lovely aged oak pulley wheel from the ship, still in what looks to be the original oak bracket with cross bolt that it was installed in. It shows wear consistent with ropes having been passed through it, and even has a broken off portion around the axis pin on one side, which was “repaired” with a piece of bent iron. The mount and pulley both show age, and there is some damage to one corner from wood deterioration. The iron nuts and bolts are rust frozen, and clearly very old. The mounting measures approximately 13″ x 10″, and the pulley wheel itself is 6″ in diameter.
It has a very nice brass plaque on it marked:-
HMS VICTORY
MIDDLE GUN DECK REPAIRS
1926
Overall condition shows that it has been waxed and cleaned repeatedly for years, giving it a lovely look that simply cannot be duplicated. An ideal item for any Historian’s desk!
