Original Item: One-of-a-Kind. These is an early British Naval telescope in the form of a wood octagonal barrel measuring 37.5 when collapsed and with a short single draw the length increases to 45″.

It has brass mounts, fore and aft, however the sliding lens cover to the front lens is now absent, the rear cover still being present. It is missing an extension-securing ring in that nothing prevents the inner barrel from exiting the casing when being drawn. It is very early and it is a genuine naval instrument of the 18th century.

The most interesting feature is an engraved silver plaque attached to the wood casing that reads:

Carried by CAPTAIN HENRY D’ESTERRE DARBY

aboard H.M.S.BELLEROPHON

at the BATTTLE OF ABOUKIR BAY August 1798

This was NOT a presentation gift; it is most probably a family heirloom having had the plaque installed as a tribute to Captain Darby who ended up an ADMIRAL OF BLUE in 1819.

The telescope does not focus properly so maybe some internal lens needs adjustment or is absent. This is a very early telescope apparently used quite late, in 1798, when it was already probably 50 years old and now offered as a fine memento from the Battle of the Nile.
