Original British Napoleonic P-1796 Light Dragoon Saber with Scabbard Marked to the 10th Light Dragoons Original Items

Original Item. Only One Available. This is an untouched gem, straight out of an old English Collection! This is a standard Napoleonic era iron mounted Pattern 1796 Light Dragoon Saber in iron scabbard. The leather covering to the grip partly missing however the Chappe (rain-guard) of the hilt is clearly marked with the Regimental details: 10 L.D. / C / 16, which indicates it’s use in the 10th Light Dragoons, C Company and 16th Trooper. The scabbard itself is also marked C / 16.

The P-1796 Light Cavalry saber uses a widening blade toward the tip called a HATCHET POINT which apparently greatly aids to the force of the blow delivered. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE himself complained that this was against the “Spirit of War”. Of course the Germans also adopted it and there it is referred to as the “BLEUCHERSABEL”.

The 10th Light Dragoons were originally raised in 1715 as Gore’s Regiment of Dragoons, in response to the Jacobite rising. They were later renamed the 10th Regiment of Dragoons in 1751, and by 1806 when the Napoleonic Wars were underway, they were again renamed the 10th (Prince of Wales’s Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Hussars). They saw much action during the wars, and fought in General Wellington’s BATTLE OF WATERLOO as part of the 6th Cavalry Brigade. They were commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George Quentin, who was wounded, and Lieutenant Colonel Lord Robert Manner, who later became the 4th Duke of Rutland.
