Original Item: Only One Available. This was released from a Regimental Museum upon closing down and had been previously on display in the Officer’s Mess. It is a “SPONTOON”, a long spear carried into battle very often by an Officer or Senior Sergeant, and became very handy for removing a French Cavalryman from his horse. That may be the case but its real purpose was to show the soldiers “on the line” where their commander was in all the smoke and confusion.

This example is stamped on the hard wood haft with a Broad Arrow over B.O. standing for Board of Ordnance. The haft has been shortened for display purposes to 26″, bringing the total including the head to just over 43,” which is ideal for UPS Shipping. Looking at the cut, it was done quite some time ago, probably to make it easier to display, or due to damage. The iron head consists of a spear head of 12″ mounted on an iron socket with long almost 10″ iron lames down the length of the haft.

These were carried at all Napoleonic Battles including throughout the Peninsular War and at Waterloo.
