Original British Item: Only One Available. This lovely British Napoleonic Bronze Signal cannon is real, and in reality these were not just used for signaling. It has a bore of about 0.66″, which does not sound very big, but in truth could deliver a hearty thump. These were often deployed in long boats and often taken ashore during “raiding parties” as well. We suspect that this example, after service, was then “retired”, making a lovely display piece for a business, castle, or other location.
This features a 10 5/8″ brass/bronze barrel, with the bore being just over 5/8 inches, and it has the standard touch hole ignition. The profile is identical to other Georgian era cannon we have seen, just very scaled down. It even has faded British proof marks in a line forward of the touch hole. It has a lovely patina, showing great age and years of cleaning and waxing.
The Cannon is mounted on its sturdy original carriage with all iron wheels and fittings, which are sturdily constructed. The axles for the wheels are particularly robust, made from bars of wrought iron. It looks to be made from sturdy English oak, and close examination shows that there are two small square areas of wood on top that were replaced, which cover the top of the securing bolts for the axles. Definitely a high level of craftsmanship on this mount! The left side of the carriage has an oval bronze data plate on the left side, which reads:
No 2
DUBLIN
CASTLE
This was the main armory in Ireland at the time, the counterpart to the Tower Armories in London. We assume that it was on display there during the later Victorian Era, possibly on the desk of some one of some importance.
Today these are mostly used to start yacht races, but during the 18th and 19th centuries were a necessary part of British Naval Warfare. An extremely attractive example in great shape, ready to put on your desk or a shelf!
