Original Item: One of a Kind. We received this out of long time storage in our large Optic’s buy of 2017 in England. This two drawer telescope measures 14″ when closed and opens to 36 1/2″ when fully extended. The telescope is of all Brass construction, with a brown leather covering the outer barrel. It is maker engraved on rear barrel:
Dickman & Son
Monkwearmouth
Also on the rear barrel it is named to the owner inside an engraved panel:
MAJ. LORD J.H.GEORGE CRICHTON
ROYAL HORSE GUARDS
JOHN HENRY GEORGE CRICHTON was born in 1839 son to the THIRD EARL ERNE, an Irish peer. In 1868 he was elected to Parliament and became Lord of the Treasury in the DISRAELI cabinet from 1876 – 1880. In 1885 his father died and he succeeded to become the FOURTH EARL ERNE. In 1885 he became the LORD LIEUTENANT of the IRISH COUNTY OF FERMANAGH, an Office he held until his death in 1914. Since becoming the FOURTH EARL, he had accepted an honorary Commission as a Major in THE ROYAL HORSE GUARDS, the regiment of his youth apparently.
Leather shows natural wear and a few dents in the outer brass barrel can be felt under the leather cover. There is a functional eyepiece cover, though it is somewhat difficult to move. The optics are dirty, so currently the telescope does not form a clear image.
Presents well and ready to display!
