Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Recently obtained from a specialist collector, who stated it was recovered over 75 years ago from the Delaware Bay, this is magnificent! An almost unblemished British 8 lb cannon ball still perfectly preserved in a 2″ thick shell of sediment.
Not unlike a Geode, this crusty mass was opened before WW2, and to everyone’s amazement the exterior nicely fell into two pieces. One half still holds the just over 4″ diameter iron ball with the casting ridge clearly visible just as it was issued. The “top side” of the sediment remained in one piece and can be replaced over the ball to again just look like a large grapefruit size chunk of sediment.
A fascinating find with wonderful charm apparently discovered exactly where one would expect, in the Delaware Bay that was the scene of a Naval action during the Revolutionary War in 1782.
Everyone who looks at this is awestruck, it is as if the ball was solid gold. It is mounted on a simple but perfect desk stand and will constantly be a center-of-attention conversation piece.
A genuine British 8lb cannon ball in wonderful condition still half encrusted with sea bottom sediment and a removable top portion very possibly from action in 1782. Overall width is approximately 7 inches.
