Original Item: Only One Set Available. Here we have an exceptional cased side lock percussion double barrel 12 bore fowling piece, made by the famous makers W. & C. Scott & Son circa 1860. W. & C. Scott started in 1834 and were well known for their better class shotguns. The name changed in 1858 to W. & C. Scott & Son and in 1897 they merged with P. Webley & Son to become the World famous WEBLEY SCOTT REVOLVER & ARMS COMPANY LIMITED.
This example is a definitely a high quality example, featuring lots of engraving work on the metal components. It also has a lovely checkered figured walnut stock, definitely a top class appointment. Both engraved lock plates are marked W. & C. SCOTT & SON, and the barrel rib has a somewhat faded marking as well:
W. & C. SCOTT & SON LONDON. LAMINATED STEEL
Laminated steel barrels were highly attractive, as well as being more resilient than the regular steel used in barrels of the time. The bottoms of each barrel bear the correct Birmingham proof marks, including the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC “proof” and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V “viewed” marks. There is also the CROWN / BP definitive proof, and a 12 marking, indicating “12 bore” or about .729″. There is an additional Birmingham proof on each breech plug, and these are post 1853 style proofs.
The gun breaks down correctly, and is fully functional as far as we can tell. The mainsprings on both locks are strong, and they both hold correctly at half cock, firing at full. The cap nipple cones on the barrels are in great shape, but are definitely modern replacements. The finish on the metalwork now a lovely worn plum patina in most areas.
The stock is definitely lovely, with lots of the original checkering remaining. There is however some cracking around the lock area on the left hand side, and there is also wood missing on the right fore stock woodline area by the barrel wedge. The piece comes with a lovely brass tipped ramrod under the barrel, which looks to be original.
The fowler comes complete with a lovely fitted Mahogany Case, which measures 32″ x 10″ x 3 1/2″ and has hook closures on the side with a brass carry handle. The upmarket case also features small ivory button protectors at the corners, originally totaling 12, however one is now missing. When broken down and with the hammers at full cock the gun fits in perfectly, with compartments for the action and the barrel. It also has a lovely embossed copper powder flask, as well as a fantastic three piece cleaning rod, which has a worn brush attachment stored in the next compartment over.
A very fine cased W. & C. Scott & Son 12 bore fowler, which could possibly be researched, complete with some great accessories! Ready to display!
