Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous private-purchase brass British spotting scope engraved to Lieutenant Henry Barkly Dalgety of the 7th Hussars. The faux wooden wrap on the front piece of the scope has come off and is loose on the scope, but it is still present. The eyepiece still has a functioning cover. When the scope is fulled extended, the engraving is visible on the furthest piece, reading LT. H.B. DALGETY 7TH HUSSARS. The lenses are very dirty and this example could really use some TLC.
Henry Barkly Dalgety was born on August 15th, 1868 and was first made a Lieutenant on February 26th, 1890, in the 7th Hussars. He would be made a Captain on January 28th, 1898, when he was chosen to serve in South Africa during the 2nd Boer War. He had previously seen service in South Africa from 1896-1897. After the 2nd Boer War he continued to serve, being promoted to Major on February 26th, 1908. He briefly served as an acting Lieutenant-Colonel during World War I with the 7th Hussars, seeing service in Mesopotamia. He passed away on June 29th, 1947, at the age of 78.
The three draw spotting scope measures 28⅝” when fully extended, and 9⅝” when fully collapsed. The front has a diameter of 1⅞”. This is a fantastic spotting scope with some damage, ready for further research and display.
