Original Item: Only One Available. Discovered in an old ranch house in Nebraska, this was the typical work horse of ranchers in the post Civil War era west. Guns of this type are also well known for use on Stage Coaches and Railroad cars. These were made in some quantity in England for the U.S. Export market, which was always looking for good percussion shotguns.
The gun is fitted with two 33 1/2 barrel and measures 50″ in overall length. Each of the moderately engraved locks is signed GILLESPIE and the gun comes with a very nice wood ramrod. The underside of the barrel is marked with B & P and the bore size of 14, as well as the British Birmingham CROWN / BP post 1856 provisional proof for barrels. The barrel strap is also faintly marked with LONDON FINE TWIST.
At some time the “wrist” of the stock has been fractured and has been repaired by a Frontier Gunsmith by attaching two brass plates, one to either side as an interim repair. It probably sat thereafter over the fireplace for the next 50 years, was moved to the barn and forgotten for the last 100 years. The locks function, however neither has a half cock position. Also the left cap nipple is smashed in.
Lightly cleaned, this is typical of ranch life in the mid 1860’s after the Civil War. Very Decorative, Ready to display.
