Original Item: Only One Available. This came to us straight out of a collection where it was well looked after for over 50 years. This is a very nice British Double Barrel percussion shotgun, in what looks to be 14 bore, a very popular size then. It is fitted with a 26″ double barrels and measures 42 1/2″ in overall length.
Each of the locks is heavily engraved with a lovely hunting scene, and is signed W. CHANCE & SON, a well-known London gunmaking lineage. William Chance & Son was the name they used from 1842-1856. The gun comes with a very nice original wooden ramrod, which has a bore clearing “worm” on one end. The brass rammer cap is unfortunately worn and will fall off if pulled hard.
The underside of the barrels are marked with the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / P Birmingham proof and viewed marks, as used from 1813 to 1856. The barrel strap is also faintly marked with LONDON STUB TWIST, and still shows clear twist marks.
The locks both function correctly, holding at half cock, and firing at full, however the right hammer screw is a replacement. Both cap nipples are present, but worn and damaged. The wood stock is in very good condition, with no major cracking or damage that we can see. The butt plate tang was at some time bent upward, and fixed back with a small nail, which no longer does the job, so it sticks up slightly.
This is a great looking gun, and would look perfect mounted on the wall. Ready to display!
