Original Item: Only One Available. Not our typical line of country, however, included in an English Maritime Collection that we purchased was this really fascinating brass ship’s bell. Measuring 10 inches across at the mouth it stands 11 inches tall including the hanging mount. It is very heavy, just manageable with one hand, if you’re quick!

The bell comes complete with the detachable clapper with an integral hook on the top that attaches to eye on the bell’s interior.

The exterior of the bell is heavily engraved in large, over one inch tall letters:

RESOLUTION

WHITBY

On the other reverse it is beautifully engraved with a Whale over the following script:

Death to the Living

Long life to the Killers

Greasy luck to the Whalers

Across the bottom under the saying is an engraved Whaling Harpoon.

WHITBY is an old Whaling town in the North East of England on the Yorkshire Coast on the North Sea. It is probably the most well known Whaling Ship port in England. Research tells us that “RESOLUTION” was launched in 1803 and that in 1814 brought back the record amount of Whale Oil from one voyage at that time, a staggering 240 tons.
